1. The concept of children's and young adults' literature, its aesthetics and function 2. Genres, and the meaning of the lyrical 3. Fairy tales and legends, the Romantic period 4. Illustrated books, their function and development in the first half of the 19th century 5. Girls' novels and adventure literature in the second half of the 19th century 6. German children's literature in the first half of the 20th century; Erich Kästner; the development during the Second World War 7. Post-war development in West and East Germany 8. Imaginative literature, its function and benefits; the main authors 9. Realism in children's and young adults' literature in the 1960s and 1970s 10. Thematic diversity in the 1980s 11. New girls' novels oriented toward the readers' actual needs and interests 12. Post-1989 literature, the identity problems of the child and young adult hero 13. Literature about the Czech-German and Czech-Austrian relationships

Learning outcomes
The course provides a general overview of the development of German children's literature, its main authors and works, with a special emphasis on more recent literature and themes. Students will examine their own reading experience while working with specific literary texts.
The student " Can define the concept of children's literature, its main aspects, typical genres and literary forms " Can describe the development of German children's literature, and can allocate the main works to individual literary periods " Can orient him/herself in the basic primary and secondary literature of the given discipline " Can, for a given topic, select a text and evaluate its appropriateness for the age, interests and linguistic competence of the target readership

To obtain credit - Independent home study of primary children's and young adults' literature texts - Analysis and interpretation of these texts in seminars, along with demonstrating the student's knowledge of the development and trends of the literature
