Learning outcomes |
The course introduces students to the issues and themes of contemporary Canadian Indigenous literature in English by discussing a number of significant works by both established and emerging writers on the background of some of the most influential theories of decolonization and resurgence. The course provides an outline of Canadian Indigenous literature by investigating pieces from the first works published in 1970s to the very fresh texts of the last two years. The selected works deal with issues such as residential school experience and its consequences, living on and off reserve, Indigenous identity today, orality versus written word, etc. Thomas King, Maria Campbell, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, and Richard Van Camp will be among the authors discussed.
