Children learning a foreign language: synchronic and diachronic overview. Age and First/Second Language Acquisition. Characteristics of young language learners. Elements of dramatization. Story telling with children. Selection criteria of materials for children. Rhymes and songs in teaching EFL to young learners.

Learning outcomes
|
This course is aimed at working with the texts that can be used in pre-primary and primary classes. Students will be exposed to the materials typical for this target audience, they will also analyse the texts of fairy tales, song lyrics, rhymes, etc, as well as learn how to work with them creatively. The course will include interactive lectures and seminars. DVDs showing extracts from real pre-primary and primary classes will be used.
By the end of the course, students in this class are expected to: * Be able to find in the texts key words and phrases to be used with young learners * Be able to use the phonological aspects of the English language while dealing with young learners * Apply basic principles of reading skill formation with young learners * Select texts relevant for the target learners and be able to dramatize them with young learners
