Course content
|
Students will learn about the key periods of English literary development from the very beginnings to the end of the 18th century. The works in seminars will be based on selected texts of this period of literary development and students will learn how to analyse and interpret them and put them into proper political , economic and cultural contexts.

Learning outcomes
|
- To provide a brief survey of the development of English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period until the end of the 18th century - Prepare students for extensive reading and work with literary texts - Teach them how to critically analyse and interpret literary works/extracts
At the end of the semester students will be able to - acquire a survey of the history of the English written literature; -deepen their interpretative skills; - extend their knowledge of the English language by being able to speak critically about longer representative texts older English literature; - use their critical views in shorter essays; - learn how to start and develop their reading logs and literary portfolios; -learn how to work with texts making use of investigative/explorative methods; - learn to connect the world of literature with that of literary science and history;.

Prerequisites
|
- Regular preparation for seminars, reading assigned portions of literature - Ability to apply the experience in reading English texts in seminars, in particular when interpreting selected works of old English literature - Make links between studying literature and studying cultural studies subjects - Regular attendance of lectures

Assessment methods and criteria

Students prove their ability to analyse and interpret selected texts of older English literature in the oral and written forms (an essay/project). - successful mastering of the written test at the end of the semester
