Learning outcomes
|
The subject is focused at students´ gaining theoretical knowledge of the English sound system and being acquainted with phonetic properties of English sounds. Short theoretical lectures are followed by seminars focused at practical exercises. Students learn to distinguish and to produce isolated English sounds and during the course they discover its special sound character of connected speech. Students improve their pronunciation with the goal of native-like speech production practising English rhythm and intonation together with weak forms and aspects of connected speech. The subject is completed with an examination at the and of the summer semester in the 1st year.
Students who complete the course will gain essential phonological and phonetic competencies: - Knowledge and skills to perceive and to produce English phonemes in different forms of their contextual allophones - Knowledge and skills of exclusive phonetic features : aspiration, lip rounding, labialisation, plosion - Ability to recognize sound structure of words, focusing at individual syllables and the sequence of phonemes, ability to place and produce the word stress properly together with the tone structure of the word - Ability to produce prosodic properties of the sound system: sentence stress and intonation patterns Students will further learn to: - Recognize isolated segments but also features fixed to connected speech - Be aware of the difference between written and spoken form of the language and reflect this skill in other subjects - Ability to perceive and recognize basic features of different variants of English and its major dialects - Ability to transcribe any English production or a text using the IPA symbols

Prerequisites
|
Students are obliged to participate actively in the seminar, read relevant literature and pass credit tests in order to get a credit from this seminar. Students must be able to actively communicate in English, at least on level B2. Assessment methods and criteria

Active participation in the seminars, reading and good understanding of the recommended texts and theoretical topics. Transcription of spoken English with the use of IPA. Following theoretical content of the lectures during the course. Passing 3 minor tests Passing the pronunciation test Passing the Credit test Passing the Exam.
