Course content
At the completion of this course, students should have an excellent grasp of the poetry of twentieth century America, a better understanding of what poetry is and how it functions, and a method for using what they have learned for better performance during examinations, and for their own teaching of literature.

This course is intended to examine American poetry in relation to its Modernist and Postmodernist perspectives, with special emphasis on Free and Formal Verse, Imagism, Confessional Poetry, Organic Verse, Open Field Poetry, and Language Poetry, in order to survey the variety of ways in which twentieth century American poets have attempted to portray, reflect, and create the reality that they perceive.
