1. What is Europe? Geographical and historical determination, its knottiness. 2. European culture. Intellectual and cultural resources of European tradition. 3. Hellenic polis and philosophy. 4. Roman legal and political thought. 5. Judeo-Christian religion. 6. Birth of Europe in the early Middle Ages. 7. State and Europe. The emergence of the state in the Middle Ages and its historical transformations. 8. Nation and Europe. The origin of the idea of nation and nationalism. Herder, Renan, Gelner ... 9. Attempts to unify Europe politically in the Middle Ages and modern times. 10. Attempts to unify Europe on the basis of totalitarian ideologies. Communism and National Socialism. 11. Modern ideas of European unification. The birth of the European federalism - British liberal historians, Lord Acton, A. Briand, Masaryk, Coudenhove Kalergi, Ortega y Gasset, F.A.von Hayek, Churchill, Spinelli, Monet, Schumann ... 12. Basic idea of European integration after World War II. European Convention on Human Rights in 1950, Council of Europe, ECSC, Treaty of Rome (1957), Maastricht Treaty, EU enlargement and deepening, the Constitutional convention and the proposition of Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe, Lisbon Treaty ... 13. EU as a community of values. The aim of the course is to present intellectual and cultural resources of the European tradition as the basis of political unification of Europe.
Learning outcomes: - knowledge of intellectual and cultural resources of European tradition - knowledge of historical attempts to create political unity - knowledge of philosophical reflection of Europeanism - ability to be oriented in current debate about the future direction of the European Union - ability to distinguish ideological sources of different approaches to the future of EU -ability to present arguments for different approaches. |
