Course content
1) The concept of violence, the phenomenon of violence, types of violence. 2) War and violence in ancient thought: Heraclitus, Plato and Aristotle, Cicero 3) The causes of violence and war in Christian thought - Aurelius Augustinus; rightful war and rebellion against tyranny - Thomas Aquinas 4) War and violence in modern philosophy: Hobbes, Kant, Hegel 5) Theory of Revolution: Marx, Masaryk 6) The contrast between power and violence - H. Arendt 7) Realism, pacifism and rightful war 8) Wars of the twentieth century and the twentieth century as a war - J. Patočka 9) End of History and Clash of Civilizations - Fukujama and Huntington 10) The legitimacy of violence in modern society. 11) State and Violence: Benjamin, Derrida 12) Violence in society

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to give a general overview of the issue of violence in the state and modern and traditional society.
Learning outcomes: - knowledge of concept, types and displays of violence - knowledge of philosophical reflection of violence - ability to argument for and against individual approaches to the legitimacy of violence - orientation in the current debate on the issue of violence

The course will be finished with seminar paper on one of the topics of lectures, in the extent of 7 pages, using one primary and three secondary sources.
