Course content
|
The state final examination consists of the written and the oral parts. The written part contains an examination paper in the form of an essay focused on selected issues from the sphere of the Didactics of the German language, German linguistics or literary science. The oral part of the state examination consists of three parts: 1) In the area of the Didactics of the German Language the student proves his knowledge in the theory of foreign language education, in particular the ways of acquiring language means and development of fundamental oral and communicative skills. In the second half, the practical part of this examination, the student proves practical ability to apply the theoretical knowledge of didactics by elaborating a specific written preparation for one of his classes. 2) In the area of German Linguistics the student proves his ability of complex linguistic analysis by applying the theoretical knowledge acquired during the course of his studies to a specific text. The ability to conduct academic dispute associated with one of the thematic areas determined on the basis of the offer of the obligatory courses of the master programme. 3) In the area of Literary Scholarship (Science) the student proves his/her ability of proper orientation in the History of Literatures of the German language areas by giving an example of a literary text analysis in the given cultural and historical context. An academic dispute to one of the thematic areas selected from the offer of the master studies obligatory courses is an integral part of this examination. By means of this dispute the student also proves good orientation in literary critical literature as well as his/her practical ability to apply this knowledge to a selected (concrete literary text, including his/her showing possibilities of the didactic use of the knowledge in German language teaching and learning). The defence of the diploma thesis is part of the State Final Examination.

The main aim of the State Final Examination is to confirm the philological knowledge acquired during the course of master studies and the checkout of standard philological knowledge acquired during the student's Bc. studies (specifically, the history of literature of the German language areas in the sphere of literary scholarship and the knowledge acquired in phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, stylistics and textual linguistics in the linguistic area). Within this examination also the adequacy and appropriateness of the students´ oral performance at the levels C1 - C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (the CEFRL) is being evaluated.
The graduate is able to fully and immediately understand, interpret and translate spoken and written German texts concerning common life situations and common functional styles close to his professional sphere. The graduate's speech and communicative skills achieve the minimal level of C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages (CEFRL). The graduate is able to carry out a didactic analysis of the subject matter (the content of the curriculum) and apply suitable teaching forms and methods to achieve his/her educational goals in the give curriculum. The graduate is capable of viewing wider language connections from the synchronic and diachronic and comparative points of view and can apply them in the teaching/learning of the German Language. The graduate will also acquire an ability of the deeper understanding of texts of the German-language with a special regard to Literature for Children and Young Adult Readers and can apply the selected literary works to the process of teaching the German language.
