Course content
1. Introduction to the subject and its issues (basic literature to the selected theme, defining the region, political, economic characteristics of the region and characteristic features of nationalities within the so called first Czech Republic) 2. The Czechoslovak year of 1938 from the viewpoint of the region of North Western Bohemia (situation in North Western cross-border area, partial mobilization, communal elections, an attempt at the coup , mobilization, escape of officials and members of SdP, the birth of "freikorps" and their activity in the border-areas, the Munich Dictate) 3. The separation of the border areas of the Czech lands (military occupation of north western areas of Bohemia; evacuation, escape and ejection of Czech and Jewish inhabitants and German antifascists from these areas) 4. Formation of the Sudeten German Gau (political and administrative incorporation of the Sudeten German Gau in the German Reich, elections in December 1938, German inhabitant's entering/joining the NSDAP; The Sudeten German Gau as a "Mustergau"; the NSDAP Gau) 5. Position of Czech (Jewish) and German inhabitants in the occupied border areas (Nazi Germanisation plans) 6. Decrees of the president of the Republic and reestablishment of the Czechoslovak state in the years 1940 - 1945 (1. Decrees of the London period; 2. Preparation of Reestablishment of Czechoslovakia; 3. Decrees of the President of the Republic in the period immediately after the war) 7. Resistance and Resistance Movement against National Socialism in the first phase of the World War II 8. The birth and formation of the idea of Ejection and Transfer of the Germans from the post-war Czechoslovakia (in the domestic resistance movement, in the foreign resistance movement, attitude of democratic Germans to reestablishment of the Czechoslovak Republic) 9. The turnover in the war (the impact on Czech and German inhabitants, prisoners of war and foreign workers, German refugees from the Reich, possibilities of resistance and resistance movement). 10. The war and its results and consequences (the fundamental breakthrough- bombing the Sudeten territory by the Germans in the Sudeten German Gau in the years 1944/45, death marches and evacuation of concentration and prisoners-of war camps; the end of the War in the Sudeten Gau) 11. The border areas of the Czech lands after the war (end of the war and the birth of "Revolutionary National Government" /the Czech acronym RNV, the arrival of military and security units to border areas of the Czech lands , internment/detention camps, massive explosion in Krásné Březno and the "Ústí Massacre" on 31st July 1945) 12. Ejection and forcible transfer of German inhabitants from Czechoslovakia after World War II (ejecting German inhabitants in summer of 1945, Potsdam conference and forcible transfer of the Germans; organized forcible transfer of German Inhabitants in the period of 1946 - 1947) 13. The resettlement of the border areas of the Czech lands in the years 1945 - 1947 (return of Czech refugees, national administration, industrial seizures, the new plan of resettlement if the Czech border land by Czech and some other Slavonic inhabitants, election of 1946 in the border areas) 14. Consequences of the compulsory transfer of German inhabitants for the border lands of North Western Bohemia

Learning outcomes
The students who have finished the course called "History of the Germans in the Czech Lands in the 19th and the First half of the 20th century" have a chance of penetrating into the complex issues of the end of one thousand year- long Czech-German cohabitation on the example of one selected region. The conflict Czech-German community from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries finally arrived at the tragic disentanglement in the closely observed years. Students will get acquainted in greater detail with the history of the last decade of these relationships from the point of view of the Czechs and the Germans, domestic and foreign Czech and Sudeten (German) resistance movement. This course, conducted in the Czech language, has its thematic follow-up in the literary critical course "Forcible Transfer and Ejection as Reflected in the German-written Literature from Bohemia and Moravia".
Detailed familiarization of students with fundamental issues and problems of the end of the Czech-German cohabitation and their application to the Region of North Western Bohemia.
