The dissertation thesis focuses on the issue of tourism in protected nature areas with emphasis on river landscapes and their impact on local development, environment and regulation. The aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive view of the impacts of tourism in these areas and to analyse the current status of the issue. I believe that the results of this thesis will be useful for the professional community, protected area managers, and the public in general who are interested in sustainable tourism development in compliance with nature protection. I hope that this work will contribute to a better understanding of tourism development issues in protected areas and provide suggestions for further research in this area. Parts of the thesis have been developed through a series of basic and applied research projects. The three most significant outputs that have supported the results of this thesis are Rural Tourism in Protected Areas: Implications, Regulation and Development in the Student Grant Competition (UJEP)[ Venkovský cestovní ruchu v oblastech s ochranou přírody: Následky, regulace a rozvoj v programu (SGS, UJEP)], and Assessing Potential and Carrying Capacity tourism in the Elbe valley in the section Hřensko - Litoměřice (Štěbetáková et al. 2022)[ Hodnocení potenciálu a absorpční kapacity cestovního ruchu v labském údolí v úseku Hřensko - Litoměřice (Štěbetáková et al. 2022)], in cooperation with the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic and also the Děčín navigation stage: a step towards sustainability or loss? The potential of shipping from the perspective of tourism stakeholders in the Support and Stabilization of Young Researchers in the Ústí nad Labem Region programme[ Plavební stupeň Děčín: krok k udržitelnosti nebo ke ztrátám? Potenciál lodní dopravy z perspektivy dotčených aktérů v oblasti cestovního ruchu v programu Podpora a stabilizace mladých vědeckých pracovníků v Ústeckém kraji (KUUK)].
This study makes a significant scientific contribution through a unique combination of qualitative and quantitative methods that have enabled the identification and interpretation of key relationships between tourism, nature protection and regulation in the study area. It presents a comprehensive case study whose findings can contribute to the design of more effective strategies and policies for managing tourism in high nature value sites. The study also serves as a model example for similar regions where nature protection and tourism development come into contact. A key result is the finding that the introduction of regulations can contribute to a better tourism environment with respect to sustainability, including economic gains in terms of quality and visitor numbers. At the same time, the research revealed that local actors are not yet fully prepared to apply this approach, and still prefer to increase visitor numbers.

Tourism is an ever-intensifying phenomenon of our times. Due to the large number of actors required for its implementation, it affects the natural, social and economic environment of the destination in multiple ways. Tourism can be considered as an engine for the development of certain areas and undoubtedly has many positives. On the other hand, it is also accompanied by a number of negatives that need to be targeted and managed to limit their impact. Regulation is considered a crucial instrument for reducing the negative impact of tourism, guiding and setting the conditions for the development and impact of tourism in tourist destinations. Objective of this research is to examine the development and consequences of tourism in protected areas and the motivations, effectiveness, and impacts of environmentally motivated regulations that influence the development of these areas as tourist destinations.
