Informace o kvalifikační práci Representation of Suffragettes in the 2014 Graphic Novel Sally Heathcote: Suffragette and the 1911 Novel Suffragette Sally.

This diploma thesis examines the portrayal of suffragettes in two novels: the 1911 novel Suffragette Sally by Gertrude Colmore and the 2014 graphic novel Sally Heathcote: Suffragette by Mary Talbot. The theoretical part focuses on two main issues. The first explains the history of the suffragette movement in the United Kingdom, while the second explores the graphic novel genre and its value.
In the practical part, the female characters in both novels are analysed and compared. Three key topics are focused on: women's political activism, the influence of social classes on women's motivation to fight for the right to vote, and the relationships between men and women. Although both novels deal with the same issues, they were published more than a century apart, which raises the question of whether Mary Talbot brought a new perspective on the topic given her experience as a woman in contemporary society.
This work aims to prove that both authors positively represent female characters and the suffrage movement and that each provides a unique narrative.
