This Bachelor thesis analyses the positive effects of the British Raj, while also paying due attention to the negatives. To do so, the dark past of the East India Company's rule and its transition into Crown rule will be explored through their atrocities. To observe the positives that can be found in British India, E. M. Forster's A Passage to India (1924) and Rudyard Kipling's Kim (1901) were selected. The two books were written by authors with contradicting opinions of the Empire and by their comparison, we see how colonialism would influence Indians and the British. To explore the failure of using the positive influence that came out in the Raj, Mahatma Gandhi's An Autobiography is analysed, in order to build on the potential peace and understanding that failed to materialise.

Colonialism is a business venture that the British undertook and, through that, caused blood to drown the plains of foreign land as people were put into slavery and forced to obey. This not only caused a skewed mindset among the majortiy of the British, but it also battered the identity of people who were colonised.
Through determination and will, India found its own independence; and by doing so, it inspired many others to find their own. The years of the British Raj lasted nearly over a decade, which forced cultures within to clash and mix even to the later years, influencing each other to no end. This thesis aims to prove how British rule was just as positive as it was a negative.
