Byly provedeny simulace molekulární dynamikou za účelem studia struktury jediného polymerního řetězce polyethylenglykolu (PEG) dvou různých délek ve vodě a methanolu v silném vnějším elektrickém poli. Konformační změny polymerního řetězce vyvolané silným vnějším elektrickým polem byly sledovány prostřednictvím gyračního poloměru, složek gyračního tenzoru, poloměrů setrvačnosti kolem souřadnicových os, vzdálenosti mezi konci a distribuce dihedrálních úhlů.

Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to study the structure of a single polymer chain of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of two different lengths in water and in methanol in a strong external electric field. The conformational changes of the polymer chain caused by the strong external electric field were monitored by measuring the radius of gyration, the components of the gyration tensor, the radii of inertia around the coordinate axes, the end-to-end distance and the dihedral angle distribution. The size of polymer coil decreases in both solvents with increasing intensity of the external electric field. The polymer coil of initially spherical average shape deforms with increasing intensity of the electric field into an oblate shape in methanol and into a prolate shape in water at intensities of electric field higher than 1 V/nm. The helicity of the polymer chain was quantitatively characterized by the helical content. The formation of helical sequences in the chain is enhanced at intensities of electric field higher than 1 V/nm. Changes caused by the strong external electric field in the solvent-solvent and solvent-polymer hydrogen-bonding structure were monitored by measuring the number of hydrogen bonds. The solvation of the polymer chain is worsened by the electric field. Water and methanol become poor solvents for the polymer chain.
