The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse the play The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh with specific focus on the humour the author uses in this play and the many ways the humour is realised and manifested. The author will focus on the analysis of the behaviour of the characters, their language and other characteristic features of The Lieutenant of Inishmore which contribute to its distinctive expression.
The thesis is going to explore not only the aspects of humour and the grotesque used in this play but also compare their use to the tradition of the Czech productions of The Lieutenant of Inishmore. The peculiar humour in Martin MacDonagh's work has managed to capture the attention of the Czech audience from the start, and this thesis will thus explore the reasons behind the dramaturgical choices by the Czech theatres and aspects of their stage realisations.
