This bachelor thesis focuses on a vindication of Joseph Conrad and his novel "Heart of Darkness", particularly as a reaction to a sharp criticism made by a Nigerian author Chinua Achebe in year 1975. The novel Heart of Darkness will be analyzed in terms of language, setting, main character etc. Achebe's arguments will be examined in order to demonstrate the importance of minding all the historical circumstances before making a criticism. The objective of the work is to provide a deeper understanding of the historical background of the authors and the way it shaped their attitude and expression. It will connect this aspect with the criticism made by Chinua Achebe. The aim is also to find an answer for a question, why is Joseph Conrad so often target of critics.
