This bachelor thesis proposes to discuss the ideal of a "proper lady" in the Georgian and Regency periods as articulated by James Fordyce in his work "Sermons to Young Women," and to analyze the literary reactions to this ideal in the selected works of Jane Austen. Fordyce's ideas are a prime example of prioritizing attractiveness to the male gender and suppressing individual personality traits in women with the aim to adhere to the social expectations. While avoiding to directly disagree with the "official" social norms, Austen implicitly stresses the importance of individuality and the personal growth of her heroines. Exploring Austen's treatment of Fordyce's image of the female ideal will be used as a way to determine whether this ideal has any actual merit, or if it is something that should be deemed unnecessary and potentially even harmful.
