V praktické části analýzy byly interpretovány úryvky z The Handmaid's Tale a The Testaments a následně byly porovnány s feministickými teoriemi prominentních autorů jako například Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler, Charlotte Perkins Gillman nebo Luce Irigaray.
The thesis titled Looking at The Testaments through Feminist Theory: analysis of feminist elements on the character of Aunt Lydia analyses Margaret Atwood's novel The Testaments with focus on its connection to feminist theory. As The Testaments has been receiving negative feedback from the readers who struggle to find the notion of feminism in the novel the thesis aims to prove that Margaret Atwood has based the hyper-patriarchal society of Gilead on feminist theory and in the process delineate what causes the misunderstanding of the novel's fundamental theme.
Both The Testaments and its predecessor The Handmaid's Tale were grounded in the theory of evolution of the feminist movement to delineate the changes that occurred in the forty years that went by between the publishing of the novels. Margaret Atwood's connection to feminism was defined and analysis of the readers' reviews was conducted. In the practical analysis, excerpts from The Handmaid's Tale and its sequel The Testaments have been interpreted and compared to feminist theories of prominent authors like Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler, Charlotte Perkins Gilman or Luce Irigaray. The comparisons were carried out in three main categories, the portrayal of women as the Other, maternal dilemma and depiction of sex and gender.
The thesis proves that while the dystopian world of The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments might, at first look, suggest encouragement of misogyny, Margaret Atwood used several key feminist theories to make the importance of equality even more glaring. Furthermore, several arguments why readers might have difficulties understanding the feminist message in The Testaments are proposed ranging from negative press surrounding Atwood to poor understanding of her satirical approach to the theme.

The Testaments is a sequel to Margaret Atwood's world-famous novel The Handmaid's Tale. The novel represents the genre of speculative fiction and follows three main female characters who invite the reader into deeper understanding of the misogynous politics of Gilead. Despite the novel's vast success, Margaret Atwood was criticised for propagating patriarchy and consenting to oppression of women through her portrayal of Gilead's society. I will argue that the novel, in fact, warns against the dangerous way our society is going. Consequently, this thesis will show how Atwood purposely shows misogyny in extreme environment of hyper-patriarchal Gilead to make the issue even more glaring. For the purpose of delineating several key feminist theories to the novel, I will be using the character of Aunt Lydia and through her example analyse three main issues connected to gender that the novel explores, i.e. how gender affects one's position in society, how women of Gilead represent the theory of "Other" by Simone de Beauvoir and how Atwood uses the gender bias of motherhood.
