Zásobní buňky jsou svým umístěním a morfologií podobné coeolomocytům jiných bezobratlých živočichů, u kterých takové buňky většinou plní různé imunitní funkce.

Tardigrada is a phylum of invertebrate microscopic animals with bilateral body composition, four pair of legs and a body covered with the cuticle. They are known for their ability to survive very tough conditions. They can do that by entering a cryptobiotic state in which every metabolic function is halted, their body is shrunken and the cuticle is folded into a thick layer surrounding their body. In this state, they can survive exreme conditions like dehydration or very low temperatures. There is a coelom-like cavity in their body, filled with fluid and cells, which are freely transported through the body cavity by movements of the body fluid. Their main function is the storage of nutrients and because of that, they are often referred to as storage cells. Other functions of these cells are being debated and studied. Storage cells are morphologically and in location similar to coelomocytes of other invertebrates, which usually have immunological functions. In nematodes, which are in many ways similar to tardigrades, coelomocytes can phagocytose different particles from the body fluid. The cell culturing is an affective method, which pushes the research of cell biology forward. Studies of storage cells cultures are in progress as well. Some of these studies showed that making a viable primary culture of these cells is under the proper conditions possible.

Želvušky (kmen Tardigrada) dokáží tolerovat řadu stresových podmínek (například téměř úplnou dehydrataci, vystavení extrémně nízkým i vysokým teplotám, a dokonce i otevřenému vesmírnému prostoru).
Obsah:
obecná charakteristika kmene Tardigrada
Ultrastruktura zásobních buněk
Druhová variabilita
Zásobní buňky ve vztahu k anhydrobióze
Kultivace zásobních buněk
