Tato diplomová práce pojednává o osvojování anglických idiomatických frází nerodilými mluvčími neboli studentů angličtiny jakožto druhého jazyka. V teoretické části je jako první probíráno osvojování druhého jazyka. Následuje kapitola zaměřená na víceslovná spojení a jejich výčet s hlavním zaměřením na idiomy a jejich charakteristiku a klasifikace. Na závěr je diskutována didaktika angličtiny jakožto cizího jazyka se zaměřením na učení slovní zásoby a idiomů. Teoretická část se skládá z výzkumu, ve kterém je zkoumána schopnost studentů angličtiny jakožto jejich druhého jazyka rozpoznat, zapamatovat si a použít anglické idiomatické fráze. Výzkum je zaměřen především na vliv věku a jazykové úrovně jazykové v angličtině na osvojování idiomů.

This diploma thesis deals with acquisition on English idiomatic structures by non-native speakers, i. e. learners of English as their second language. In the theoretical part, second language acquisition is discussed first of all. It is followed by a chapter concerning on multi-word units and their listing with main focus on idioms and their characterization and classification. Finally, didactics of teaching English as a foreign language is discussed with concentration on teaching vocabulary and idioms. The practical part consists of a research in which the ability of learners of English as their second language to recognize, remember and produce English idiomatic phrases is examined. The research is concentrated on influence of age and a level of proficiency in English of students on their acquisition of idioms.

The field of idiomatic structures still belongs to current issues of lexicological research. In this diploma thesis, the author will investigate acquisition of idiomatic structures by non-native speakers who learn English as a foreign language. The theoretical part will consist of three parts. The first part will deal with definitions of idioms and idiomatic structures and their classification on the basis of different criterions. In the second part, second language acquisition will be discussed. The third part will deal with English as a foreign language didactics with the main focus on didactics of vocabulary. In the practical part, the results of the research will be demonstrated. The research will be based on a test which will be given to learners of different levels of English and age. The test will examine learners´ ability to notice idiomatic structures, understand them or deduce their meaning from the context, as well as their ability to use them correctly. The aim of this diploma thesis will be to discover whether learners of English as a foreign language are able to recognize and apply idiomatic structures, as well as the age of learners when this ability is stronger. The diploma thesis will be written in English.
