Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na porovnání používání modality rodilými mluvčími anglického jazyka a českými studenty anglického jazyka v akademických textech. Teoretická část práce se zabývá tématy akademického písemného projevu, modality a představuje současný profesionální výzkum o těchto tématech. Praktická část poté zkoumá použití modality rodilých mluvčích a českých studentů anglického jazyka v akademických textech. Srovnání četnosti výskytu projevů modality byla provedena s cílem odpovědět na výzkumné otázky, které byly stanoveny v praktické části této práce.

This diploma thesis focuses on the comparison of the use of modality in written academic English of native speakers and Czech ESL students. The theoretical part of this thesis introduces the notions of academic writing, linguistic modality and it presents the current professional research on these topics. The practical part researches the use of modality by native speakers and ESL students in academic writing. The comparison of the frequency of occurrences of instances of modality was conducted in order to answer the research questions that were established in the practical part of this thesis.
