Course content
1. Palaeontology, its historical development, basic structure, relationship to other biological disciplines. 2. The origin of life, basic hypothesis, modern theories of chemical evolution, origin of the genetic code. 3. Taphonomy, basic principles of fossilization and fossil record, pseudofossils, trace-fossils. 4. Systematic palaeozoology. 5. Systematic palaeobotany. 6. Palaeoiochnology, fossil traces classification and their interpretation, the importance of bioturbation during sedimentation process, recurrent ichnofacies. 7. General principles of palaeoecology, basic concepts and definitions, biotic and abiotic factors, valence, tolerance, niche, trophic relationships in the geological past, population. 8. Ecological reconstruction of the palaeoecosystems and their limiting factors. Bioevents and extinction in the fossil record. 9. Methods of the palaeocological research - electron microscopy, palaeoclimatology, magnetostratigraphy, palaeopalynology, fossils dating. 10. The importance of molecular palaeontology for the palaeoecology 11.-13. Field seminars / excursions.
