Course content
1. Development of world typography after World War II. The influence of the Swiss, German and Dutch scene on later developments. 2. Development of world typography during the 80s and 90s of the 20th century. DTP revolution, democratization of graphic design. 3. Contemporary world and European typographic scene. University centers. Forms of authorship. 4. Development of Czech typography of the 20th century (Preissig, Menhart, Muzika, Teige, Sutnar, Hlavsa, Týfa, Benda, etc.). 5. Film / excursion, according to the current course of the semester. Assignment of semester theoretical work / papers. 6. Development of Czech and Slovak typography since the 1990s. The boom of the 90s. (F. Štorm, T. Brousil, Umprum, VŠVU, FUD) B. Practical exercises 7-11 Typographic task - cover design and book typesetting. - Typographic design of the cover using your own drawing, photography or other graphic processing. - Book rate based on real documents from the publisher. Comprehensive book solutions, ie: covers, bookmarks, bindings with spine, title pages, signet, patitula and imprint (depending on the cover), typesetting and pagination mirrors, choice of font, etc. - Basic rules of the Czech rate. - Technological preparation of the publication, connection of the pictorial part with typographic adjustment, determination of the format and scope, determination of the tariff pattern, technological and typographic rules

Typography and the science of writing II The course acquaints students of the specialization Graphic Design with basic typeface concepts, nomenclature and the development of Latin script from Roman capital, through the Gothic period, the invention of book printing, the development of book fonts from Renaissance - dynamic, through Baroque - transitional to Classicist - static antiquity, then fonts 19. century, revival neo - renaissance movement and modern modifications of classical book scripts. It also focuses on the acquaintance with personalities of Czech typography of the 20th century (Preissig, Menhart, Music, Teige, Sutnar, Hlavsa, Týfa), personalities of world typography (Gill, Koch, Tchichold, Zapf, Frutiger, Lubalin), important world fonts and contemporary trends in typography. The study subject also includes practical exercises on basic practical aspects of typographic work.
