Course content
Lecture Topics: 1st consultation: -Theoretical approaches to health and disease, health and disease context, health determinants, psychosocial aspects of health and disease, social consequences of illness. -Quality of life, support of active approach to health, factors influencing health condition, mental resilience of the individual, resilience. -Burnout syndrome in non-medical health workers - definition, situation leading to burnout, signs of burnout, stages, diagnosis, prevention, risk factors, consequences of burnout. -Psychosocial aspects of caring for the sick, disabled and aging. -Psychosocial support, supervision - terminology, forms. Seminar Topics: 1st consultation: -Research studies in the field of sociology of medicine and health, measuring quality of life. -Psychosomatics, stress and burdens, stress management, vulnerability, mental hygiene. -Socio-psychological competence, development of social competences in health care. -Social skills development, cooperation skills, assertiveness, conflict management, empathy, supervisory program in the organization. Self-study topics: -WHO and its role in prevention of population health. Health 2020, stressful situations and their effects - conflict, frustration, stress, trauma, crisis, deprivation -Social work in health care -Mental hygiene.

Learning outcomes
Students are going to gain knowledge about psychosocial aspects with focus on health care. It introduces students to the terms of illness, healt and social dimension of health and illness. Within the optional subject, the knowledge is focused on the interpretation of biomedical and bio-psycho-social models of health and disease, the concepts of vulnerability and resilience. The student is acquainted with the concepts of mental resilience, furthermore with psychosocial aspects of the care for patients with various diagnoses. Part of the optional subject is the issue of burnout syndrome in helping professions, mental hygiene and supervision. The subject supports the development of analytical and communication skills of the student with regards to their involvement in the management of a health or social workplace.
Expertise: The student can describe psychosocial aspects in health care. They can explain individual aspects of managerial function in the social and psychological level. Students can define terms related to that area. Students can describe burnout in helping professions, possibilities of supervision and mental hygiene. Professional skills: The student is able to organize, plan, manage and perform a managerial position in a healthcare facility regarding to psychosocial aspects. Student can propose measures in the area of prevention of burn rate by the medical staff. Student can propose a supervision program on the workplace. The student can analyze contract psychosocial problem. Competences: The student is able to use acquired analytical communication skills in management of medical or social facilities
