Course content
1. Regional policy of the Czech Republic and the EU - goals, tools, subjects. 2. Regions with concentrated state support; definition of structurally affected regions. 3. Historical and geographical characteristics of structurally affected regions. 4. Localization factors of economic and social development of structurally affected regions (transport, environment, etc.). 5. Political specifics in structurally affected regions, institutional environment - local, regional and national level. 6. The problem of the environment, revitalization and regeneration of areas heavily affected by mining and industrial activities. 7. Social policy, labor market and employment policy in structurally affected regions. 8. Social stabilization and reduction of social differences in structurally affected regions. 9. Housing and housing policy in structurally affected regions. 10. Support for business, human resources and innovation in structurally disadvantaged regions. 11. Education in structurally disadvantaged regions. 12. Eurofunds, subsidies and development of structurally disadvantaged regions; possibilities for submitting projects under regional policy instruments. 13. Cross-border cooperation as a tool for the development of structurally disadvantaged regions; cross-border cooperation projects and their benefits.

Learning outcomes
This course will focus on politics in these regions, especially in the Ústí nad Labem Region (or the Northwest Region). Thematically, the course focuses selectively on selected problems of these regions with emphasis on regional policy and economy (entrepreneurship and innovation, education, social stabilization, infrastructure, public administration, etc.). At the beginning of the course, the specifics of the regional policy of the Czech Republic and the EU will be explained with a focus on its current goals and tools. After completing the course, students should have a better understanding of the overall position of structurally disadvantaged regions and its problems and should be able to analyze selected political specifics in these regions. Emphasis will be placed on practical local policy, demonstration of specific problems and proposal of measures to improve the current situation.
The student is able to use professional terminology. The student distinguishes the specifics of regional policy of the Czech Republic and the EU. The student is familiar with key topics of political and sociological theory and practice. The student understands the overall position of structurally affected regions and its problems. The student is able to analyze selected political specifics of these regions.

To successfully complete the course, it is required to: 1) prepare a "position paper" on a selected issue, which will be selected in agreement with the teacher and a presentation of this selected issue; 2) an oral interview on a current political problem in structurally disadvantaged regions, which the student can choose for himself.
