Course content
1. Introduction to the study, acquaintance with the literature and requirements for completing the course. 2. The politics of electoral reform and the discipline of electoral studies 3. Four waves of the politics of electoral reform. 4. The politics of electoral reform as a new research perspective and its specifics. 5. Rationalism vs. (structural-)institutionalism in the study of electoral reforms. 6. Renwick´s typology of the politics of electoral reform. 7. The politics of "non-reform": barrier approach of Rahat and Hazan. 8. - 9. Temptation of the powerful: the politics of electoral reform in the Czech Republic since 1989. 10. Changes the rules of democracy: Orbán´s electoral reform in Hungary. 11. - 14. Selected case studies (e.g., Estonia, Slovakia, Poland, France, Japan, Italy, Israel, New Zealand, etc.).

Learning outcomes
The specialized course expands knowledge from the discipline of electoral studies on the topic of electoral reform policy, both in a theoretical and empirical perspective on the example of selected processes of parliamentary electoral reforms. Thus, the course is divided into two parts, the first (lecture) part is devoted to the theoretical presentation of this issue, the second (seminar) part of the course is then focused on the presentation and discussion of selected specific empirical cases.
The student is able to use professional terminology. The student distinguishes individual theoretical approaches used in contemporary politics of electoral reform. The student is able to characterize the specifics of selected instances. The student is familiar with the key topics of the politics of electoral reform.

To successfully complete the course, active participation in discussions during seminars is required, credit seminar work presenting the results of own research.
