Course content
-Education of individuals with a mental disability. Education of children with mental disability in different types of facilities. Characteristics of different study programs. Educational methods and forms of work, didactic principles. Strategies of education for children with mental disorders in the process of individual and work integration. Inclusion in the education area for children with light brain dysfunction (primary education). -Modifications of education approaches with the regards for the level of mental retardation, specifics of individual's personality. Specifications of lectures and study programs suitable for individuals with a mental disability (elementary schools, special schools). Czech language and literature, mathematics, science, art, music, physical education. Methodology of steps toward reading, writing and counting skill development - its application and modification with regards for the mental disability. Overview of suitable educational material. -Social skills of an educator as a necessary part of the intervention education process. Advantages and disadvantages of integration and inclusion of individuals with mental disorders. Individualization of educational goals, contents, methods and work strategies. -The position of a teacher during social skill teaching, the position of a counsellor during sessions with an individual with a mental disorder. Principles of work with these individuals. The key purpose of a personal assistant and the teacher's assistant during social skill development. Cooperation of teacher and assistant and parents. -Intervention and therapy in special education care. Social skills as a formso f intervention for children with mental disorders. -General overview of therapy types suitable for children with mental disorders - hypnotherapy, ergotherapy, canisterapy, art therapy, drama therapy, music therapy, basal stimulation therapy etc.

Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to the theoretical and practical preparation for the education process of children with a mental disability in primary education and all forms of education procedures embedded in education legislature. Students will be introduced to a variety of work procedures which contribute to the development of social competence of children with a mental disability as it is reflected in the national curriculum of the Czech Republic. Students are able to understand the education principles of people with mental disabilities within a variety of educational facilities. The main goal of the course is to highlight the causes of difficulties in socialization and behavior of individuals with a mental disability.
