1) Political Power: a) historical overview, b) Thucydides; c) Machiavelli; d) Nietzsche; e) Foucault 2) State and Violence, the right to violence: a) Arendt; b) Benjamin and Derrida; c) the right to resistance (Kant) 3) Authority, its Loss and Crisis (Arendt, Rádl) 4) Sovereignty in Political Theory: Hobbes, Bodin, Spinoza, Schmitt (legitimacy and sovereignty) 5) Power (authority) versus Freedom 6) Lukeš and his Power

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is historical and systematic interpretation of power, relationship between the state and the violence and the role of authority and sovereignty in modern conception of state. It is related to this interpretation of mutual restriction of political authority and freedom.
Learning outcomes: students will acquire the following academic knowledge: -can systematically interpret particular issues and illustrate the links with individual thinkers or historical epochs - can present a foreign language text (about 20 pages) on the issue and confront it critically with a primary text. - can systematically work out the above mentioned topics based on the knowledge of the history of political thought.

Assessment methods and criteria

To obtain an exam: the oral defense of a written work and answering one question in presented topics. Written work must have a minimum of 8 pages (about 15,000 characters including spaces) and must be based on the presented topics and at least two texts (primary and secondary foreign language text). The topic will be approved by the lecturer in advance.
