1) Introduction (about syllabus, requirements, literature). 2) What is a nation, what is nationalism? 3) Historical context of the origin of the nation, the relationship between nation and state, differentiation: nation state x state nation. 4) Stages of the proces of nationalization, phases of national revival. 5) Nationalization of Czech society (searching for new identities). 6) Is nationalization always a positive process? 7) Czechs and Germans = long journey to disaster. 8) The idea of Europe. Is Europe a clearly defined space? 9) The idea of Europe on the ruins of nation states. 10) European identity in 20th century postnational discourse. 11) Discussion and atest.

The aim of this seminar is to expose the historical process of nationalization in the European context. We're also asking for a situation in which Europe as a post-national space is located, what kind of identity Europe offers to its citizens.
Students will get an idea about the causes, nature and consequences of the process of nationalization of Europe. Further: how is the legitimacy of the modern nation-state derived. National-state functions, structure and elites, and last but not least, the crisis of the modern nation-state and attempts to overcome it. |
