Learning outcomes
The aim of this subject is to describe the character of pre-Socratic thought and define it towards previous mythopoetic tradition as well as toward sequential philosophical tradition connected with the speech of Socrates. The course focuses selectively on Ionian archaical thinkers - Anaximander and mainly Heraclitus - and on the representatives of Eleatic tradition - Parmenides. On the characters of Heraclitus and Parmenides the course will demonstrate two different approaches toward the problem of origin and continuation, identity and diversity. The course focuses on how the basic philosophical themes are structured by pre-Socratic thinkers; towards which nowadays philosophical traditions is returning.
Student will learn in detail about the oldest period of the Greek philosophy and specific topics which are introduced here.
