Course content
1. The notion of metaphysics, the subjects of metaphysical study. 2. History of metaphysics. Plato: ideas and principles. Aristotle's metaphysics: substance and accident, matter and form, potency and act; aetiology. Scholasticism: theological vs. ontological concept of metaphysics, essence and being, problem of universals. German idealism: Kant's question about the possibility of metaphysics and Hegel's answer. 3. Analytical metaphysics. Existence; ontological status of properties, individuals and their identity, ontological status of events and facts, the time and the space, dispositions, possible worlds, question of essentialism, causality, determinism vs. libertarianism, distinction of the physical and the mental, monism and dualism.

Learning outcomes
Student acquaints with the notion and the history of metaphysics. The course includes also an introduction to contemporary analytical metaphysics.
Student acquires the ability to discriminate the distinctively metaphysical approach to reality. He/she acquaints with the basic outlines of the history of metaphysics, with main topics of analytical metaphysics and with contemporary methodology of metaphysics.

Assessment methods and criteria

During semester the student constantly follows the lectures and is interested in the discussed topics. He/she collaborates actively in seminar. The final written test consists in two randomly selected questions.
