Course content
1. Basic concepts: Content and territorial demarcation. The emergence of nation states, the concept of boundaries and borders (border areas), border effect, reach, impacts, change of function. Demarcation of the border territory at different hierarchy level. 2. Geographical and regional development of the border region. Geographic location, endogenous potential, inland versus borderlands / center versus peripherals, objective and subjective conditions. 3. Position of border regions in the integration processes. The concept of integration, identity versus integration, the "closed" borders, "the Iron Curtain", a meeting place, junctures of European spatial development 4. Regional / structural policy of the European Union. Stages of development, funds, programs, initiatives, aims, regionalism, regional policy of neighboring states. The European Charter of spatial planning, the concept of spatial arrangement of Europe / ESDP and others. 6. The European (EU) view. Border / cross-border regions of the EU as bridges to neighbours, prospects - Europe without borders? , internal and external borders, framework of the Madrid Convention / Charter of border and cross-border regions. 7. Central European view (cooperation with neighboring states). Czech cross-border cooperation and the neighboring (formerly candidate, now EU Member States), the "great spaces" of cross-border cooperation (e.g. CADSES) 8. Institutionalization and legislation of cross-border cooperation. Spatial subjects / structures, the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR, AEBR), the term Euregio, Euroregion, local public authorities, population, participants 9. The European Union and the Czech borderland. Phare CBC, interreg. cross-border concepts and strategies, investment projects, the Common Fund for Commodities, people-to-people 10. Spatial differentiation and regional / structural policy in the Czech Republic. Spatial differentiation in the Czech Republic, inland and border regions, centre and peripherals. Situational analysis of the Czech borderland by way of hard data. 11. Czech border regions and cross-border cooperation. Typology, the Regional Development Strategy, Institutions, Euroregions, priority areas. 12. Borderland as an object of empirical research. Empirical investigation, relevant domestic and foreign projects of geographic, economic, political science, sociology, etc. Focus 13. Practical activities with Czech and international statistical sources and cartographic works. Spatial identification, units, comparability over time, material, spatial data sources, character of indicators, selective survey.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the territorial demarcation of border regions, the study of boundaries (e.g. functions of intermediaries) and border effect, the potential of geographic and regional development, support and the issue of cross-border cooperation and Euroregions included. Practical steps are primarily explained by examples of the Czech border regions and cross-border cooperation between the Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany.
Student will get acquainted with the subject matter, be able to analyze and interpret partial phenomena and the more general context and in the long term characteristic features of the topic in the studied countries and regions.

Assessment methods and criteria

Essay. Requirements: o proper preparation for lectures / seminars, i.e. regular and thoroughgoing reading of literature for a particular week, active participation in the discussion; o seminar work: it will be worked out according to the requirements of scientific text (it will be specified in the seminars) and handed in no later than the last teaching day of the term (it will be also specified). For each day of delay, the number of pages will increase of two pages. It will not be possible to pass the exam if the work is not finished.
