Rousseau 3) Second Discourse and The Social Contract 4) French Revolution and its political foundations. Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen 5) E. J. Sieyes: What is the Third Estate? 6) E. Burke, life and work, between liberalism and conservativism 7) American Revolution and its political foundations up to the creation of the federal constitution of the United States of America 8) Declaration of Independence 9) The Federalist Papers and their main subjects 10) Alexis de Tocqueville: Democracy in America, I 11) Alexis de Tocqueville: Democracy in America, II 12) John Stuart Mill and his importance for the formation of liberalism 13) Karel Marx and Bonapartism

Learning outcomes
Students will become familiar with the development of European political thinking and personalities and issues which played a key role in the political development of modern democracy and Rechtsstaat.
Students will acquire the following competences: - Ability to critically assess political theories and works of political thinkers of the 18th and 19th century - They should be able to produce independent scholarly studies on selected subjects of political philosophy of the 18th and 19th century.
