Tommaso Campanella, Francis Bacon 5. Political thought of European Reformation, Martin Luther 6. John Calvin 7. Jean Bodin and the theory of sovereignty 8. Hugo Grotius and the creation of theory of international law in Spain 9. The origins and development of absolutism 10. Thomas Hobbes and the theory of social contract 11. John Locke 12. John Locke and religious tolerance 13. Charles de Montesquieu and the separation of powers as a defence against despotism

Learning outcomes
Students should become familiar with the development of European political thought from Renaissance through Reformation and all the way to the revolutions of late 18th century.
Students will acquire the following competences: - Ability to critically assess political theories and works of political thinkers from the 16th to 18th century - They should be able to produce independent scholarly studies on selected subjects of political philosophy from the 16th to 18th century.
