Course content
1 - Historical development of elections and electoral law. 2 - Classification of the electoral systems. 3 - Research of the electoral systems. Electoral laws and their criticism. 4 - Majoritarian electoral systems I. 5 - Majoritarian electoral systems II. 6 - Semiproportional electoral systems. 7 - Proportional electoral systems. 8 - The single transferable vote and personalized proportional electoral systems. 9 - Mixed electoral systems. 10 - Electoral reforms and policy of electoral engineering. The development of the electoral system in the Czech lands. Electoral reform in the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the phenomenon of elections and in particular on the issue of electoral systems. It introduces with the influence of electoral system on party system or the political system as a whole. The course is structured thematically, with regard to individual problems, and follows the main theoretical knowledge of current electoral studies. Individual problems, phenomena and theories are complemented and illustrated by comparison of selected examples from world politics.
Student can use scholarly terminology. Student is able to characterize the specifics of each type of electoral systems. Student distinguishes between different types of electoral systems used in the Czech Republic in elections to various bodies since 1990. Student is able to characterize the specifics of the electoral system used in Czechoslovakia in the years 1920-1935 and 1946.

The course has no prerequisite courses or other prerequisites.

Assessment methods and criteria

For successful completion of the course is required the presentation of a paper, writing a seminar work, and passing a written test, the questions will be based on the content of lectures and compulsory (basic) literature.
