Course content
1. Ancient roots of anti-Judaism 2. Middle Ages, Christianity's relationship to the Jews, anti-Judaism 3. Religious and socio-economic roots of Jew-hatred and prejudice 4. Modern age, enlightenment and new forms of anti-Semitic hatred in the liberal era, Jewish assimilation 5. Emancipation of the Jewish population 6. Divergence of views on the concept of race; essence of racism, racial exploration versus racial ideology 7. Racial theories since the 70s of the 19th century and their misuse 8. Nationalism, xenophobia - Crisis manifestations of European history 9. Germany nationalism since the early 19th century 10. German national socialism as state doctrine, supported by the racial laws 11. The second World War and the Holocaust 12. A new anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and anti-Zionism

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to identify the main lines of racial theories and ideologies in the European environment from the middle Ages to the present. Special emphasis will be placed on history of anti-Semitism.
Student gains the following expertise: - Basic concepts and theories associated with racism and anti-Semitism - Knowledge of the chronological development of racism and anti-Semitism, particularly in Europe - Learn to distinguish racial theory of racial ideology - Learn to recognize typical routine procedures for racial ideology - Learn to distinguish between anti-Semitism from anti-Zionism

Completion of the course is subject of seminar paper on the extent of about 10 pages and a subsequent test of knowledge that takes place by means of a written test.
