Course content
1. Origin of Polis, its social and religious base, its specifics and development. 2. Power base of polis, equality and freedom, private and public sphere, common good. 3. Roman res publica, power and authority, legal principles, offices. 4. Modern Age as a state institution; internal and external sovereignty. The problem of legitimacy. Nation-state. Integration of states. 5. Politeia: organization of offices. Constitution as power limitation: the division of powers, the system of counterbalances and mutual control, human rights. 6. Ancient and modern democracy. 7. The concept of politics: Weber, Schmitt, Sartori ... 8. Politics as nonviolent consensus among individuals and groups with different opinions, ambitions and interests. The aim of the consensus is decision making, which is obligatory and enforceable by any violence. 9. Autonomy of political sphere, the moral basis of politics, the legitimacy of violence. 10. Political unity and diversity - ethnic, religious, racial, opinion and interest. Power ambitions. 11. Political negotiation, its means, methods and limits. Political decision making. 12. Public opinion, conflict and consensus, participation and exclusion.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to get students acquainted with the historical and intellectual context of the basic concepts of political thought, as Polis, constitution, politics, power, authority, sovereignty, privacy and the public, law, justice, and more. The course is an introduction to political philosophy.
