Course content
In the winter semester 2019/2020, the course has a practical content. It includes an excursion to Athens associated with a tour of the prestigious museums focused on ancient antiquity and the visit of historical monuments related to the functioning of the Athenian polis.

Learning outcomes
The course aims to familiarize students in a more detailed and deeper way with some areas of ancient philosophical thought. Content of the course will be modified, selected topics focus on the systematic interpretation of selected philosophical problem, and reflect contemporary Czech and international research. Work in the course is based on reading and interpretation of the relevant primary texts and on study of accompanying interpretations in the secondary literature.
Students will get acquainted with ancient philosophy and the specific issues discussed in this period. They will experience different modes of reading a philosophical text and be able to assess the capacity and lifetime of philosophical themes formulated at the beginning of the philosophical tradition. They will acquire the following knowledge: - can describe the specifics of ancient philosophical thinking - they are familiar with specific philosophical problems - they can confront the various interpretive approaches - they can explain the contribution of ancient thought for later philosophical tradition

The course focuses on the reading and interpretation of relevant primary literature and related secondary texts. Students prepare papers based on secondary sources. 75% attendance is required. The condition for obtaining credit is a presentation in written and oral form, using secondary academic literature (Czech or foreign language), alternatively, essay on a specific topic using primary and secondary sources.
