Christianity and Platonism; Aurelius Augustinus; Boëthius; Eriugena; Anselm; problem of universals; Arabian and Jewish philosophy; reception of Aristotelian philosophy in the West; medieval university; Thomas Aquinas; mysticism of Eckhart; Scotus; Ockham; Petrarch and the birth of Humanism, Platonism in Renaissance; anthropology; Erasmus of Rotterdam; political thought in Renaissance; cosmology of Giordano Bruno; birth of a new scientific methodology: Galileo, Bacon.

Learning outcomes
The course concentrates on medieval conceptions of being, truth, good, and also on the relation between philosophy (or science) and faith in various periods of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The course presents the medieval understanding of human life and observes the remaining heritage of these ideas in the European thinking.
Student acquires orientation in the philosophical story of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, general knowledge of main problems of these philosophical periods, ability to recognize the historical origins of some constant topics of the European thinking.

Assessment methods and criteria

During semester student constantly follows the lectures and is actively interested in the discussed topics. The final written test consists in two randomly selected questions.
