Course content
Lecture topics: (2 hours/week) 1. Psychological issues of illness. Psychosomatic and somatopsychic relationships, autoplastic picture of illness. 2. The experience of illness in time, the relation of the patient to the illness. Categories of patients from the psychological point of view. 3. Psychological problems of hospitalization, iatropathogenesis, sororigenie and egrotogenesis. 4. Professional deformation, the danger of burnout syndrome. 5. Psychology of pain, anxiety, fear and feelings of inferiority. 6. Types of disability and psychological approach to clients. 7. Dying and death from a psychological perspective. Seminar topics: (2 hours/week) 1. Psychotherapy in health work. 2. Disease as a challenging life situation. 3. Communication with a sick client. Communication within the client's social network. 4. Unproductive behaviour, productive behaviour and its manifestations. 5. Special features of the approach to clients in individual departments. 6. Productive and unproductive behaviour, the health worker as a client. 7. Principles of professional behaviour.

Learning outcomes
The course is conceived as a theoretical-practical unit and builds on knowledge from general and social psychology. It focuses in detail on the knowledge related to health psychology, clinical psychology, the application of psychological knowledge in health care and psychological care of the sick. Stress Management covers the management of psychological stress and strain in the helping professions, psychosocial support, post-traumatic stress reaction and psychological first aid in disasters and accidents. The aim of the course is to provide information on the essential psychological problems related to health changes and to prepare students for the specific behaviours and reactions of children, their parents or carers in illness.
Field knowledge: Upon completion of the course, the student has the knowledge that is important for professional management of challenging situations in caring for the individual needs of the sick, disabled and dying, as well as for maintaining the mental balance of an independent care and support provider. Vocational Skills: The graduate will be able to adequately meet client needs and solve problems associated with illness. The student is able to approach clients within the framework of taking into account the specifics of individual illnesses.
