Course content
Lecture topics: (4 hours/week) 1. Acute and planned care. Outpatient surgical care. Indications for surgery. Basic operative techniques. Same-day surgery, specifics of care. 2. Basics of anaesthesia and analgesia. Intensive care. 3. Perioperative care, postoperative complications. Disorders of vital functions. 4. Shock conditions. Types of wounds. 5. Infections in surgery. Pathogenesis of the progress of infection, spread of infection and prevention. 6. Traumatology. Classification of injuries. Trauma ambulance. 7. Fractures. Conservative and surgical treatment. (4 hours/week). 1. The concept of surgical nursing. The departments and equipment of the surgical ward. Requirements for Nursing staff in the surgical care unit. Legal aspects of surgical care. Seminar assignment. 2. Nursing procedures characteristic for surgical wards (antisepsis, asepsis, sterilization, wound dressings, transfusions, surgical instruments), preparation of the sterile table. 3. Nursing assessment of the surgical paediatric patient. Identification of current and potential problems. Formulation of nursing diagnoses. Admission of the child. Preparation of the child for surgical examination. Nursing documentation. 4. Nursing process of the child in the perioperative period. 5. Preparation of the paediatric patient for anaesthesia. Specifics of work in the intensive care unit Nursing process in a child with complications after anaesthesia. 6. Nursing process in a child after minor surgery. Nursing process in a child in day care. 7. Nursing process in a patient after trauma. Nursing process in a patient with a fracture.

Learning outcomes
The course is conceived as a theoretical-practical unit that introduces the student to the problems of paediatric nursing care in the fields of paediatric surgery, paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology, paediatric cardiac surgery, paediatric urology, paediatric neurosurgery. The student will be able to identify and effectively address the specific needs of the individual child in relation to surgical disease and surgical treatment.
Expertise: The student demonstrates knowledge in the field of surgery, knows the types of anesthesia, demonstrates knowledge of the principles of diagnosis and treatment of selected surgical diseases. Demonstrates knowledge of basic nursing diagnoses resulting from the biopsychosocial needs of pediatric patients. Plans appropriate nursing interventions with respect to established goals of care. Acquires skills in the implementation of specific nursing activities. Professional Skills: The student will be able to practically prepare the pediatric patient for surgical examination, surgery. The student will be able to identify postoperative complications and know their solution. General Competencies: The student is able to practically plan and implement appropriate nursing interventions within nursing care plans for individual diagnoses. The student is able to provide comprehensive nursing care for pediatric patients with selected surgical conditions. The student is oriented to the various sections of the surgical unit.
