Course content |
Lecture topics: (2 hours/week) 1. Definition of palliative care. History of palliative care. The state of palliative care in the Czech Republic. 2. Forms of palliative care. Principles of palliative care. Indications for palliative care. Palliative team. 3. Specifics of palliative care in childhood. Disease trajectories. Perinatal palliative care. 4. Communication in paediatric and perinatal palliative care (3hrs). 5. Ethical dilemmas in the provision of palliative care. Ethics consultation. Psychohygiene of the health professional providing palliative care (3hrs). Seminar topics: (2 hours/week). 1. Perception of dying and death depending on the age of the child (3hrs). 2. Communicating serious news to children and their families (3hrs). 3. Palliative therapy for common physical symptoms and pain control. 4. Assessment of pain and stress in the child in palliative care. 5. Assessment of the needs of the child and family, family conference. Care of the child and family in the terminal phase of life.

Learning outcomes |
The course is designed as a theoretical and practical unit. It introduces students to new services and types of facilities that fall within the field of aftercare and palliative care. It introduces palliative care as a holistic approach to the child with a life-threatening or life-limiting illness in the somatic, psychological, social and spiritual domains and the support of family and caregivers. It will introduce them to symptom therapy and pain management options for preterminal and terminal conditions. It will also introduce the perception of death depending on the age of the child.
Expertise: The student knows the principles of palliative care, including the specifics of palliative care in children, and is aware of the principles of communicating a serious diagnosis. The student is able to define the concept of perinatal loss and disease trajectory. Professional Skills: The student is able to assess the pain of the pediatric patient is able to communicate within the nursing team and within the family. General Competencies: The student is able to communicate own professional opinions clearly and persuasively to professionals and the general public. |
