Course content
Lecture topics: 1. Basic conceptual apparatus used in connection with multicultural issues. Multiculturalism, transculturalism. 2. Ethnocentrism. Cultural shock. Ethical aspects of providing culturally sensitive care. 3. Ethnic composition of the Czech population, development. Attitude of the majority of the Czech Republic towards cultural diversity. 4. Systems of medical and health care for foreigners in the Czech Republic, abroad. 5. Communication, language and cultural barriers in multicultural environment. 6. Social handicap of the foreigner in the majority society. 7. Specifics of the educational process for a member of another ethnicity, culture. Topics of seminars: 1. Cultural competence of the health care worker. 2. Methods of research in a transcultural environment. 3. Leininger's theory of culturally congruent care. 4. Methods of research in transcultural settings. 5. Camphiny-Bacote model. 6. Characteristics of selected ethnic groups living in the Czech Republic. 7. Characteristics of selected ethnic groups living in the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a theoretical one, which teaches students to provide quality care to patients of other cultures and ethnicities, i.e. patients with different socio-cultural needs and priorities. It also prepares them for a greater diversity of patients (diversity of culture, nationality, ethnicity, etc.). This preparedness applies not only to nursing, but also to the legislative, political and educational spheres. The aim is to provide appropriate and effective support and assistance in health and illness while respecting the specificities of each foreigner.
Expertise: The student is familiar with basic terminology in the field of transcultural care, defines the stages of culture shock, and understands methods of research in transcultural settings. The student is familiar with scientific approaches to the study of minorities and minority issues. Understands the content of the concepts of cultural tolerance and cultural sensitivity. Knows how to explain models of culturally sensitive care. Understands that providing culturally sensitive care is not providing superior care to individuals of other ethnicities and cultures. Vocational Skills: The student is able to apply models for providing culturally considerate care to minorities in the nursing process, using the knowledge gained to obtain information about and care for patients. The student is able to communicate with members of minority and ethnic groups with respect to their differences. Acquires the ability to argue with lay and professional audiences about issues of transcultural diversity in nursing care. The student is able to apply their knowledge of the customs, cultural and communication differences of minority and ethnic communities in practice.
