Course content
1. Introductory lecture, introduction to the course programme and basic reference literature Students will find out about the aim of the course and its content, including the programme of lectures. 2. Historical framework of the development of northwestern Bohemia until the arrival of Habsburgs and development of mining law The lecture will present historical development of the lands of the Czech Crown after the end of the Hussite wars until the end of the Jagiellonian period. 3. Development of northwestern Bohemia, formation of mining towns and mining business Summary of development of the area of northwestern Bohemia with regard to the proximity of the land border and contacts with Saxony, where trade routes and business contacts played an important role. 4. Specificities of historical development of northwestern Bohemia in the period before Bílá Hora, structure of nobility, noble property and important families, development of urban network, royal and vassal towns, mining business and mining towns The lecture will focus mainly on the specific development of noble structure in the given region, following the development of the network of border castles and vassal systems that were bound to them. The lecture will further focus on the development of urbanization of northwestern Bohemia, i.e. historical development of the urban network of royal and feudal towns in the context of general conditions in Bohemia and neighboring countries. We will also look at specifics of the region related to ore mining in the Ore Mountains, which laid at the basis of economic and social changes of the local society. Recapitulation of history of ore mining and minting in general, especially at the turn of the 15th - 16th centuries. 5. Renaissance architecture in northwestern Bohemia and the issue of so-called Saxon Renaissance The lecture will focus on a general introduction to the architecture of the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, pointing out diversity of late Gothic architecture in the central Bohemia and the northwestern region. Then we will briefly outline development of architecture of the Renaissance period with reference to the specific features, developmental tendencies of so-called Saxon Renaissance. Examples from Bohemia as well as Saxony will be provided. 6. Urbanism of selected mining towns On selected examples we will demonstrate several types of urban solutions of the most important mining towns in the Czech Ore Mountains, supplemented with analogies from Saxony and Slovakia. On the selected examples we will explain the difference between the growing and surveyed town and also outline general principles of the ideal Renaissance city. 7. Sacral architecture The lecture will be based on the general introduction to the typology of sacral architecture in the Late Gothic period, Renaissance and Mannerism, followed by the presentation of concrete buildings from selected mining towns with a special focus on their building development, typology of constructions and elements and designs from Saxony. 8. Urban architecture The lecture will be based on the general introduction to the typology of urban architecture in the Late Gothic period, Renaissance and Mannerism, followed by the presentation of concrete buildings from selected mining towns with a special focus on their building development, typology of constructions and elements and designs. 9. Art culture of mining towns and its connection to Saxony The lecture will focus on the characteristics of the specific environment of mining towns and art associated with them, in the sense of specific iconographic motives and themes, including their take over from Saxony to the newly established mining towns in the Czech Kingdom. 10. Significant centers of Renaissance culture in northwestern Bohemia bound to mining business I. (Jáchymov, Kadaň)

Previous disciplines of the study plan: History of the Czech Middle Ages I, II History of Visual Art I, II. History of Culture I Introduction to Regional History Basic knowledge of development of the Czech lands and Central Europe in the late Middle Ages and Early Modern Times, basic knowledge of terms related to Renaissance culture. Basic knowledge of German language is an advantage.
