Course content
1. The Agilolfings and Bavaria 2. The Frankish Empire and Carolingian dynasty 3. Tassilo and his policy in Bavaria and Frankish empire 4. Charlemagne and his position in the 60s and 70s in the 8 century 5. - 12 . Analysis of narrative and official sources.

Learning outcomes
Tassilo III was the last member of the Agilolfing dynasty that ruled Bavaria alone as a tribal duchy. He was a cousin of Charlemagne and belonged to then ruling elite. In 788 the Frankish king accused him of treason and after the process in Ingelheim Tassilo was stripped off of all honors. The aim of the lecture is to try to reconstruct motives of Charlemagne and to assess real reasons of Tassiloś fall on the basis of preserved sources.
Students will enhance their knowledge of Frankish political culture and administrative model of the Empire, legal practices of early medieval society at the end of the 8th century. They will manage to work with sources on a higher level, especially they will acquire critical approaches and learn about the possibilities of correct interpretation of texts.
Prerequisites
No other completed courses as well as no intial students´ knowledge or skills are required for this subject.

Assessment methods and criteria

Regular attendance at the course, active work with sources in accordance with instructions of the lecturer (Czech translations of the Latin editions according to MGH). Passing simple final test.
