Course content
Topics: 1. The building as a historical source I. The formal expressions of cultural phenomena - parole and lanque. Data and information. 2. The building as a historical source II. The system and its properties . GGM of probability distribution in the structures. Traces and relics of the past. 3. The building as a historical source III. Event and development. Trends. Relationship and transformation. Entropy. 4. The building as a historical source IV. Structure and texture. Viewing angle and zoom. 5. The artifact and its properties I. Quantity and quality. Practical function, aesthetic form, social significance, symbolic meaning, designation , appellativum and proprium artifact. 6. Artifact and its properties II. The transformation processes. 7. Description of the system I. Signifie and significant. The denotation and the connonotion. Subject and object. The Paradigm. 8. Description of the system II. Sign and symbol. Peirce's triad and the semiotic triangle. Ostenze, presentation and representation. 9. Description of the system III. Type a typology. Abstraction, comparison, and the dichotomy of scales in the perception and aggregation behavior. 10. The system analysis I. The content analysis. Analysis, perception, representation, sorting, quantification, synthesis, interpretation. 11. Description of the system II. Relationship analysis. Stratigraphy, flow diagram. Stage and phase. 12. Modeling I. The mental model constructs, summation, groups, graphs. 13. Modeling II. Verification and testing of the model. The iteration of procedure.

Learning outcomes
The lectures are focused on the study of the theory of construction history. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with basic theories and methodological procedures of documentation, analysis and interpretation of cultural information contained in the material historical sources. The course focuses on the issues of the information contained in the dissolving artifacts in selected circuits introduces students to the state of knowledge, especially in methodology of researching historical buildings.
The student is able to acquire, process and interpret information from historical sources based on the knowledge of research methods and techniques of formal data analysis.
Prerequisites
1. Completion of the course is not subjected to the prior completion of other courses. 2. Excerpts and evaluation of texts.

Assessment methods and criteria

Student must fulfill the following duties: - demonstrate the use of flowchart for the analysis of stratigraphy finding situation in written test. - hand in and defend a seminar paper on the analysis of the formal structure of historical sources. The paper will be developed using fieldwork or archival research, museum collections, or a set of published data.
