To review the ecclesiastical history of the Habsburg Monarchy from the Patent of Toleration to the beginning of World War I in the context of European ecclesiastical history. In addition to the toleration patent, the years 1848-1849 and the situation surrounding the Concordat will be discussed in detail. Then attention will be paid to the whole spectrum of recognized churches (Catholic, Evangelical, Orthodox, etc.), as well as unofficially operating denominations, with an emphasis on the Czech lands. A specific issue is the role of Muslims, especially after the annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Issues of popular piety, Christian-social movements, etc. will also be addressed. The aim of the course is to present a picture of the ecclesiastical issues of the Habsburg monarchy from the patent of toleration to the First World War. Then, on the basis of this concrete picture, to interpret the broader ecclesiastical issues in Europe and other areas.
Students should not only be familiar with the given topic of church history in the Habsburg monarchy, but also be able to place it in the context of European or world history. At the same time, they will be informed about their significance for the broader issues of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. There will also be overlaps with current times.
