Course content
1. Introduction - presentation of the course program and credit requirements. 2. European art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries I. (Avant-gardes, utopias, manifestos, programs, conflict between "old" and "new" art.) 3. European art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries II. (Expressionism, Art Nouveau, Cubism, Fauvism, Futurism, abstract art.) 4. Exhibitions of modern art at the beginning of the 20th century in Prague. (Associations and artists: SVU Mánes, Osma, Group of Fine Artists, Sursum, etc.) 5. European modern art of the first half of the 20th century. (Dada and surrealism, art deco, new objectivity, Bauhaus, etc.) 6. Art and totalitarian regimes (Nazism, Stalinism). (Art in Germany and Italy during the Fascist period. Art of socialist realism - esp. the Stalinist period.) 7. Modern art in the USA. (The spread of modern art to the USA during and after World War II.) 8. Postmodern art in the West. Basic characteristics of postmodern art and its chronological classification. 9. Postmodern art in Czechoslovakia (or the Czech Republic) (The reception of postmodern art in a specific situation in the 1980s and 1990s.) 10. Art in the age of its technical reproducibility. Development of graphic and reproduction techniques in the 19th and 20th centuries, influence on the perception of a work of art. Benjamin's interpretation of the technical reproducibility of a work of art. 11. The changing status of the artist and the work of art. 12. - 13. Excursion - Müller's Villa, National Theatre, Cubist architecture in Prague - Podolí. (four-hour excursion). 14. Final meeting, summary of the material covered, final discussion.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with a clear development of the history of fine arts from the end of the 18th century to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Emphasis is placed on presenting stylistic developments and important personalities of the period. The course includes a visit to a permanent exhibition, exhibition or cultural monument.
Course graduates gain knowledge about the development of art in the 19th century. They are able to identify and date important works of art and buildings. They have a grasp of issues relating to individual art movements, schools and centres.
