Course content
1. The beginnings of relations to works of the past and the birth of deliberate efforts to preserve monuments in the service of the national idea (up to the beginning of the 19th century). 2. The personality of E. E. Viollet le Duc and the purist concept of monument restoration. 3. Establishment and activities of the Central Commission Monuments in the Austrian Monarchy. 4. Theoretical concepts of G. Dehio, A. Riegl, B. Ebhart at the turn of the 19th - 20th century. 5. Max Dvořák and his reform of the Central Commisiion, the development of the field until the period of the First World War. 6. Monument care after the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic. 7. Monument care after the Second World War until the end of the 1950s. 8. The first Czechoslovak law on cultural monuments 22/1958 Coll. and the development of monument care in the 1960s - 1980s. 9. The North Bohemian region and the fate of its monument fund in the period of "building socialism". 10. Act No. 20/87 Coll. on State Heritage Care as amended I. 11. Act No. 20/87 Coll. on State Heritage Care as amended II. 12. Heritage conservation in France, V. 12. 13. Monument care in Germany, Austria, Slovakia. 14. Learning outcomes
The development of monument care from the first manifestations of respect for historical and artistic works of the past to the current situation. After an introductory presentation of selected examples of a sensitive approach or relationship to artefacts of the past before the first legislative instruments for the protection of monuments, attention is paid in particular to the development of the principles of the protection of monuments of the 19th and 20th centuries, including the establishment and scope of the Vienna K.k Commision for the Preservation and Retrieval of Building Monuments. The concepts of the approach to monuments in the theoretical works and practical realizations of leading figures in the field (E. E. Viollet le Duc, J. Ruskin, A. Riegl, G. G. Dehio, M. Dvořák, Z. Wirth, V. Wagner) with a focus on the Central European environment. The unfortunate regional specifics of the North Bohemian region after World War II and their consequences are also mentioned, including film documentaries on the subject. Finally, a description of the current legislation on monuments in the Czech Republic and the functioning of professional organizations and executive bodies of state monument care is given. There is also a comparison with the systems of monument care in selected European countries, including information on contributory stimulation of owners of monuments and some current problems in the field.
On the basic of the acquired knowledge, the graduate has arguments in favour of the meaning and existence of the field of conservation, including comparative practical examples. The student acquires and idea of the ideological concepts of the most important theoreticians and personalities of conservation (A. Riegl, G. G. Dehio, M. Dvořák, Z. Wirth, V. Wagner) on the basis of acquaintance with their key works (or their translations or extracts from them) and is familiar with the basic sources and literature on the development of state conservation in the territory of our country in the 20th century. He is also familiar with the basic principles of the current State Heritage Care Act (including cimparison with similar principles in selected Western European countries). (S)he thus acquires a basic awareness of the development of the values of the monument in historical retrospect and thus the creation of the basis for the gradual social anchoring and development of the autonomy of the field of conservation as an applied discipline linked to a wide range of other social science disciplines. It is also about some current topics of the field as a still minimally exploited historical phenomenon, especially of the 20th century period (actual on a regonal scale for the so-called mining area of the Podkrušnohoří region).
Prerequisites
Cross-cutting historical context, especially in relation to Centra European development, is desirable. A basic passive knowledge of the German language is also appropriate.

In addition to participation in teaching, the assumpiton of an active approach in discussions on certain, especially topical, topics. The study of basic and selected recommended literature in essential. Another requirement is knowledge of basic concepts of the field, awareness of the most important personalities in the field and the ability to use knwoledge of current heritage legislation in the final written assignment on the topic of heritage conservation.
