Course content
1. A general introdutction, an introduction to the conditions and progression of the course, and introduction to the topic, basic literature and sources. 2. Sources for knowledge of the material culture of the Middle Ages, research methods. 3. Villages in the Middle Ages 4. Monasteries in the Middle Ages 5. Nobility, residences and representation in the Middle Ages 6. The royal court in the Middle Ages 7. Wartime and material culture 8. Sources for knowledge of material culture in the Early Modern period, research methods. 9. The birth of Renaissance nobility 10. The royal court at the beginning of the Early Modern period 11. Changes in the lifestyle of burghers in the Early Modern period 12. The life cycle of Early Modern man 13. Gender aspects of research into material culture 14. Final lesson - evaluation

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the issues of research in the field of history of material culture of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. With the basic research objectives, topics and approaches, as well as institutions working on the topic. Attention will be paid to the different types of sources, both primary and secondary, and how they are used to gain historical knowledge in this field, as well as the main topics, terminology, a comparison of different approaches, and their necessary synthesis.
Students acquire knowledge (terms and facts), are able to classify and categorise it, and remember it. They are able to understand and interpret the written and iconographic sources presented in this sense. They are able to understand the theories and concepts of the study of material culture in the context of cultural history. They are able to search, classify and collate information on material culture in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, and know the basic recommended literature, which they read and understand.
Prerequisites
The ability to work with text, a basic oveview of the development of history in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period.

Assessment methods and criteria

Participation in class, study of the recommended literature, preparation of a seminar paper on material culture in the Middle Ages or the Early Modern period, and active participation in discussions.
